hey, here is the article... from a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 as the highest, the critic gave us a 4... not bad!?
critic's name is Pamela... UP student... rock and roll fan... here it goes:
Another year of rock and metal show down of 15 contesting local bands in Iloilo City was held last 19th of February at Bacolod Chicken House. This year’s Epiphany of the Raging Lullaby was so far the coolest clash I’ve ever been to. The venue is just right—there was a wide space for slammers to get wild on, a wide space covered with plastic layer for viewers to sit on and a resto at the back which serves cool drinks with an OK restroom.
As for the bands, there were a few familiar ones, those that have been joining Sigabong ever since and some new entrants that are showing a good future on the rock/metal scene or bands which evolved from one to another. Most of them played old school metal which is good because the last time I heard, they’re into music played by bands like Slapshock, Greyhoundz, Cheese, etc. Finally, these guys are growing up.
One that has really caught my attention was the Final Solution band which is also known as The Martians. They were all dressed in black with a red and black Cape of Dracula. They won as 2nd placer by playing something from DIO and Black Sabbath. If I remember very well, they also won the Championship during Sigabong Clash XIII.
Another band was called Robert Kapote (not sure if that’s how it’s spelled), whose member are from my own town. They played tracks from System of a Down which is a hell lotta better from what they used to play—Creed, toink! Their vocalist has even improved, looked even crazier but the drawl of barbaric dialect is still pretty evident. Ja ja ja!!!
The band that has absolutely overwhelmed me was Korzslow (again, not sure if I got the spelling right). They covered songs from Sepultura and Soulfly. Know why I was overwhelmed? First and foremost, Angelo, an old crush, was on the vocals. He was garbed on a white sando, black and gray camouflaged cargo pants, a white armband and a gray bonnet which sadly, covered his naturally curled ebony locks. Ronald, the other vocalist was garbed on an overall with Slipknot-like masks, same as the two lead guitarists, Aldrich and I-don’t-know-his-name, also the bassist, Jeff. The band is obviously influenced by Max Cavalera and Brazilian culture because of other instruments they used. They have another member who plays some sort of a drum instrument/tambol which looked to me as something used by voodoo people when they practice their voodoo activities. Angelo also carries some sort of a tomahawk with a maracas attached to it. By the way, I saw the tambol player once at the convenience store I passed by on one night and while he was patting the instrument it made me feel like belly dancing at the melodic beat of it. Ja ja ja!!! The band also played an original composition entitled Puta or Putaka, not sure really. They didn’t win any award but they gathered a lot of slammers while playing.
The Candyflip band composed of high school boys who’s been joining Sigabong for like three or so years now were all in disarrayed executive looks, they reminded me of Koreans swarming in our country these days. I’m not familiar with the songs they played, it sounded hardcore.
The Tyran (not sure if I got the band name right but it sounded somewhat like that) played tracks Iron Maiden and I-forgot-what-band. They won 3rd place and their vox bagged the Vocalist of the Year Award. He’s cute, I mean literally cute with a cute face. I first saw him singing The Beatles songs. Woohoo!!! I also liked their original composition, a vampire song in Tagalog.
That’s all about the band I know, the rest are so so… Even the band who bagged the Championship whom they called B-U-Ray (alright, it sounded like that but I ain’t so sure,k?) is not familiar to me. They didn’t win any minor award but I guess they topped the overall average. The rest of the minor awardees are unknown to me too. Haaay… I’m no music genius either so I can’t comment much on the musical technicalities but they were all good and fun.
Aside from the contesting bands, there were also a couple of guest bands who were winners of last year’s Sigabong. The Four Horsemen who were obviously influenced by Metallica has stunned me by playing Pantera’s Cemetery Gates. Darn, the front man can really sing it sooooo good. Ahhh… morbidly sweet! He sounded like a magpie when he talks but his voice changes when he sings, it becomes raspy, a harsh grating sound. Then there’s the Diet of Worms who was Iloilo’s representative to Muziklaban. They play death and black metal music, always garbed in gothic fashion but that night, they played original compositions from their released and upcoming albums under Deadstring Records. I find nothing special about them but I like watching them cover songs from Rammstein.
Well, apart from the band and the music, the hosts, UP Hamili Brotherhood and UP Hamilia Sisterhood also had new gimmicks. They sold Sigabong CD album that includes all the original compositions from the contesting bands, Sigabong T-shirts, pins, etc. During the program, they also had trivia questions for the viewers with corresponding awards for the winners. And best of all, they sold their tickets for only P50.00. Everybody was expecting it to be P100.00.
Sigabong had been a part of my college life. Even if I’d be leaving UP this year, I’d still join another Sigabong Clash in many years to come… if possible. Ja ja ja!
